5 Things I’m Loving…

faceee

Happy New Year Everyone!! I hope you all had a happy and safe NYE and are enjoying the new year. I am here with my first post of 2014 and I am bringing you some of my current favorite products. Some I literally just started using a few days ago while others I have been using for the past month.

Kjaer Weis Foundation – I have been reaching for this foundation whenever I want a flawless finish. It’s absolutely beautiful. I am the color “Like Porcelain” and it’s literally the perfect match for my very fair skin. Spirit Demerson owner of one of my favorite online shopping destinations: Spirit Beauty Lounge put it perfectly when describing this new foundation when she said “it’s none of the shiny, heaviness of an oil-based foundation, but with all of the velvety coverage of one.  It applies like a thin veil yet still has significant coverage.  When I use it, I almost scratch my head like ‘how did that happen?” — exactly. Look out for a full review + swatches of this foundation coming very soon!

Mineral Fusion Concealer – I feel like when it comes to under eye concealers, I can never quite find “the one”. I have an especially hard time because I have severe dark circles and because my eye area is extra sensitive. Combine those things with the fact that I use only natural products and it makes it even harder to find a concealer that not only lasts but covers darkness well and doesn’t irritate my eyes. Enter my newest discovery and love: Mineral Fusion Duo Concealer. I found this at my local Whole Foods Market. I really love duo concealers. I love to mix the lighter peachy shade with the more pale pink shade to create the perfect coverage. I took a look at the ingredients and while it’s not as clean as I would ideally like (it contains Phenoxyethanol – ugh) it’s still clean enough for me. After ONE use of this concealer I was sold. hooked. in love. I can say (for now) that my search is over for the perfect under eye concealer. This baby is a keeper. I use the shade “Cool”

Jane Iredale Bitty Brow Kit – I really, really love this little brow kit. Not only does it come in the cutest packaging that’s super easy to travel with but it comes with a brow powder and wax. I actually recommended this product to May Lindstrom the other day when we were texting back and fourth about brow products and I told her that this is the one I use and recommend most. It shapes my eyebrows perfectly and does a great job of lasting all day. I use the color “Brunette”.

Organix Coconut Milk Shampoo – Okay so I literally just bought this shampoo yesterday. I know it seems crazy to mention a product after one use but honestly this stuff has made my hair look healthier in just ONE USE than it’s looked in a long time, not to mention how incredibly soft my hair is! I CAN’T STOP TOUCHING IT! I have been loyally using Rahua hair products and will continue to use them because they are truly the cleanest hair products I have found that really work amazingly well. The thing with Organix is that they are not as clean as I would like. They do contain “fragrance” which is not very comforting but they are free of a lot of nasties, including harsh sulfates. They are also extremely affordable and easy to find. It’s nice to have a shampoo that I know I can get at my local CVS. My best friend Nour actually recommended this product to me and after her description of it I literally went to the store that night and picked it up! This is definitely going to be my go-to affordable shampoo of choice. If you want instantly softer and shinier hair, GET THIS. It also smells like a tropical paradise in your bathroom after using this. Amazing.

Osmia Organics Active Gel Toner – I am trying to think of a way to describe my love for this toner without being too dramatic. I’m not sure I can do that. The first thing that comes to mind when I apply this serum every day is “how did I ever live without you?”  – seriously though, how? This cleared up a few breakouts I had within two days. It also is diminishing redness around my nose and keeping my skin super clear and glowing. Full review coming soon.

DIY | Dry Shampoo + Volumizing Hair Powder

IMG_7423x

It’s is best not to wash your hair too often so that your scalp can restore it’s natural balance and produce the perfect amount of sebum for healthy hair. Twice a week is my goal. Between washes I like to use something to keep oily roots at bay and also to give my hair some added lift and volume!

I am actually in the process of creating a small line of products which I can’t get into too much detail about just yet because it’s still in the beginning stages (if you follow me on instagram you have probably seen some teaser photos + videos) but I have some haircare items I have concocted recently. In the process of creating I came up with this really easy to make dry shampoo and volumizing powder (it really does add instant lift to your roots!).

Untitled-2

My Mom has been using this powder for the past few weeks and told me her “hair has never looked or smelled better!” and that is coming from someone who is really picky about her haircare products and who tends to have limp and hard-to-volumize hair! After seeing her results and mine I knew I had to share this simple and effective recipe with you all.

I have purchased dry shampoo’s in the past and liked them all but I actually prefer this recipe I created myself. You can tweak the ingredients based on your preference for scents and such but for this recipe I will be using the following ingredients:

diy

  • Arrowroot Powder

Is the perfect base for any dry shampoo and does wonders at soaking up excess oils from the roots.

  • Raw Cacao Powder

Not only does cacao smell absolutely wonderful, it works very well for brunettes because it doesn’t leave any streaks. It also is full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which are great for the scalp and hair.

  • White Kaolin Clay

Kaolin Clay is rich in silica and can also detoxify hair along with restoring moisture to dry and brittle hair. The clay will also help to get rid of excess oils.

  • Lavender Essential Oil

Not only is the scent of Lavender instantly relaxing and intoxicating but it’s actually great for the hair and helps to promote a healthy scalp.

*You can purchase most of these ingredients at your local health food store or on my favorite bulk-ingredient site Mountain Rose Herbs.*

Mix together all ingredients in a bowl until completely blended. This is the finished result:

IMG_7434x

Notes & Ingredient Substitutes:

  • I use one tablespoon of each powder and 5 drops of Lavender EO.
  • Instead of Arrowroot powder you can use Cornstarch and/or Orris Root Powder.
  • Instead of Raw Cacao you can use Cocoa Powder. If you don’t have light to medium brown hair skip the cacao powder altogether and use yellow cornstarch or extra Arrowroot Powder.
  • You can use any essential oil of your choice. Lavender is my favorite because it’s calming and smells delicious. Other great EO’s for this mixture would be: Sage, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Neroli, Peppermint.

Untitled-1x2

How To Apply The Powder:

  • To apply this powder I use a foundation brush. It helps to evenly distribute the powder to the roots. I dip the brush in the mixture and apply to sections of my hair (focusing on the roots). I then leave the mixture on my head for a few minutes. I start to massage the mixture into my hair as you would with any regular liquid shampoo. Last but not least; Stand over the bathtub or go outside and flip your head down, comb through your hair with your fingers and gently shake off any remaining powder. Flip your hair back up, brush through and you’ll see that your hair is thicker and your roots should no longer be oily (if they were before). Your hair will smell like a field of Lavender Flowers!

If you end up making this mixture PLEASE let me know how you like it. With the Holidays not too far around the corner, this would be a wonderful gift to give to loved ones! I would love your input :)

Natural Haircare Review | Morrocco Method Heavenly Chi Shampoo and Chi Instant Conditioner

IMG_4207

I did a few posts about my current haircare routine as well as my favorite diy apple cider vinegar hair wash awhile back and I haven’t talked much about my haircare routine since then as I hadn’t changed much around until recently. I was sent some samples from Morrocco Method Intl to try out. I was immediately impressed by the purity of their ingredients and was very excited to try out the Heavenly Chi Shampoo and Chi Instant Conditioner. I have used these for three weeks now and think they are wonderful products. I gave a quick mention to them in a recent youtube video I did but wanted to do a full review here on my blog because they are just too good to not give more mention to!

Behind the brand:

The Morrocco Method of hair, face and body care is unique as well as comprehensive. It represents over forty years of research and experimentation, integrating modern scientific knowledge with the ancient healing arts of Ayurvedic and Chinese herbalism. All Morrocco Method products contain only the finest natural derived minerals and botanicals harvested from around the world. and selected for maximum potency. Every Morrocco Method product contains each of the 92 trace minerals.

^^As you can see after reading just a little bit about the history behind this wonderful brand that I was very eager to try their products out. My hair feels wonderful after using both of these products, and has been extra shiny, smooth and extremely easy to brush through without dreaded tangles! If you are used to using Shampoo’s that lather, you will have to get used to this shampoo as it is extremely low sudsing due to such pure ingredients. It takes time to get used to but once you do, you will love the difference it makes in your hair and your scalp.

Review | Badger Seabuckthorn Apricot and Pomegranate Antioxidant Hair Oil

495

I mentioned this hair oil in my latest Current Haircare Routine blog post. I received some messages regarding the oil (how I use it, how it works for my hair, etc). I have used other oils in my hair before like Argan Oil, Coconut Oil and Jojoba Oil. I love to use all three of those oils to deep-condition my hair but was interested to try Seabuckthorn Oil.

The Ingredients are quite impressive:

Ingredients: *Simmondsia Chinensis (Organic Jojoba) Oil, *Helianthus Annuus (Organic Sunflower) Oil, *Prunus Armeniaca (Organic Apricot) Oil, *Punica Granatum (Organic Pomegranate) Oil, CO2 Extracts of *Hippophae Rhamnoides (Organic Seabuckthorn) and *Rosa Canina (Organic Rosehip), Essential Oils of *Lavandula Angustifolia (Organic Lavender), *Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Organic Sweet Orange), *Pelargonium Graveolens (Organic Rose Geranium), and Tocopherol (Sunflower Vitamin E). * = Certified Organic

***

IMG_0208 copy

Benefits:

  • Seabuckthorn Oil protects cells from oxidative damage and aids in collagen production (rich in Vitamins A, B, C, E, & K).
  • Apricot Oil easily penetrates the hair cuticle, delivering nutrition to dry and damaged hair (rich in Vitamins A, C, & E).
  • Pomegranate Oil contains high levels of antioxidants, and also promotes regeneration and strengthening of hair (rich in Vitamins B and C).

Description: Treat your hair to vitamin and antioxidant-rich oils and extracts, and watch the shine and luster return to overworked hair. We’ve selected our most powerful oils to deliver naturally occurring vitamins A, B, C, E, and K to nourish and replenish hair. Seabuckthorn and Pomegranate promote hair strength and elasticity, and Apricot is a potent emollient, imparting moisture and shine. Rosehip possesses regenerative properties, helping hair to return to its healthiest state.

Directions for use:
Step 1: Apply oil evenly to clean, dry hair. Amount will vary depending on hair type and length.
Step 2: Massage oil into hair and scalp. Work from the roots to the tips. Use a comb or your fingers to ensure even distribution.
Step 3: Allow oil to soak into hair for 1 hour or overnight. (Tip: use an old towel to protect your linens.)
Step 4: Shampoo and condition, then style as usual.

***

My Thoughts: I was particularly tempted to try out the Badger Seabuckthorn Hair Oil after reading many reviews on it. I have been a big fan of Badger ‘s products for years now and think they are one of the most trustworthy and clean brands out there today. I also think their products are very affordable and easily accessible which is always a bonus. I have tried many of their skincare products but never their haircare products so I was excited to try a sample size of this oil. I wanted to use this oil enough times before giving my full and honest opinions on the results and I have been consistently using it for more than a month now. I like to use this oil once a week for the perfect deep-treatment for my hair. I will either leave it on for a few hours or overnight and after washing the oil out and drying my hair, it instantly has a beautiful sheen to it. My hair has also been way softer than usual and just looks healthier. This oil is by far my newest favorite to use!

Over all I think this hair oil is a must have for anyone who is interested in treating their luscious locks to some good and clean hair-loving oils! Also due to the delicious scents in this oil it’s also a wonderful nighttime aromatherapy for the senses!

Britanie

My Current Haircare Routine and the “No-‘Poo” Method

IMG_0190

IMG_0178

IMG_0184

Before I go into detail about my current haircare routine I have been getting many questions regarding the “No-‘Poo” method (no shampoo) and the benefits of it. I wanted to quickly mention a few things about shampoo’s and conditioners.

Why you shouldn’t use commercial Shampoo: Shampoo was only introduced in the early 20th century — before that, people relied on soap and healthy oils, which can wash hair just as well without removing important oils. Most Shampoos on the market include an array of synthetic and harmful ingredients. Although lather isn’t necessary for a shampoo to clean well, most consumers usually expect their shampoo to lather in order for their hair to “feel clean”. Most liquid shampoos contain synthetic lathering agents like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which draws moisture from the skin and can in turn cause dryness and irritation. Most of the chemicals in commercial shampoo’s strip the hair of all the healthy oil your body naturally produces and makes your scalp much more exposed to the chemicals you are putting on it. Remember that your scalp is one of the most absorbent parts of your body. According to one of my favorite books, “No More Dirty Looks“, they state that “The scalp is basically a sponge that sops up whatever you put on it. It’s also your most sensitive skin, and it extends all the way down to your eyes, so it stands to reason we should be extra careful what goes on or near it.”

Washing with Shampoo Bars: Shampoo Bars are typically made from Vegetable based Soaps that are specifically formulated for hair. Vegetable Oils, Vegetable Butters, Essential Oils are extremely beneficial for the hair and scalp and tend to lather quite well, sometimes even better than all-natural liquid shampoos. Shampoo Bars also are compact and easy to travel with and will last quite awhile (longer than commercial or natural liquid shampoos) and you will ultimately be saving money when switching over to Shampoo Bars. If you do not have very dry hair you might not even have to use conditioners anymore which will save you even more money.

To condition or to not condition: It is a very common misconception that one must condition their hair in order to have silky, smooth and manageable hair. This is just not true. Unless you have extremely dry hair (which in that case it is recommended to condition your hair but only a few times a week) you do not need to condition your hair every day, or even at all if you choose. I personally find that when using Shampoo Bars that my hair looks and feels better when I don’t condition. Our hair is made up of natural oils. When you use commercial shampoos these strip our hair of the natural oils that are there for a purpose. If you stop using shampoo and conditioner you will notice over time that when brushing your hair on a daily basis (to evenly distribute the natural oils from your scalp) and washing once a week that your hair will be naturally soft and shiny. If you do want to use conditioner here and there you can make a very simple conditioner from equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. I made a blog post about the benefits of apple cider vinegar hair wash as I swear by it. It’s the best conditioner I have ever used. I now use this rinse once a week and it is the only thing that I use to condition my hair aside from the occasional deep conditioning treatment I do (mentioned below).

My Current Hair Care Routine:

IMG_0215

I wash my hair with my current Shampoo Bar of choice – the JR Liggets Coconut & Argan Oil Shampoo Bar. I do this only once a week. This bar has made my hair so ridiculously healthy and soft that I do not even need to condition anymore. In between washes I will do my Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse to get rid of any build-up throughout the week and to give my hair an added shine and softness. Since I just stopped using liquid shampoo my hair is still getting used to the process of only washing my hair once a week and so if I feel like my hair is greasy I will wash with plain Baking Soda and water. I also like to use the Lulu Organics Hair Powder which helps to get rid of excess oil and also adds some body to the hair! You could also just use Kaolin Clay or Arrowroot Powder to achieve the same effect!

IMG_0223

I do a leave-in conditioning treatment once a week. I am currently using the Badger Seabuckthorn Hair Oil. This oil smells amazing and is a wonderful deep treatment for the hair. I leave this on my hair over night and rinse out the next day. I like to do a deep treatment as well (once every few weeks) and for this I love to use my Honey, Egg and Olive Oil Hair Mask or just plain Coconut Oil.

I also brush my hair daily. It is extremely important to brush your hair to evenly distribute the naturals oils from your scalp down to your hair. It will help to make your hair look healthier and feel softer and more healthy!

IMG_0211x

If you stop washing and conditioning your hair with commercial liquid shampoos, eventually your scalp with restore it’s natural balance and produce the perfect amount of sebum for healthy and beautiful hair.

IMG_0186

IMG_0187

I will be sure to update on how my hair is responding to my new routine and will also be doing a video.

Have you ever gone “No-‘Poo”? What is your favorite way to wash your hair?

Britanie

This is such an easy at home hair recipe. It literally takes seconds to prepare! I promise just after doing this one time you will see an immediate difference in your hair! It’s amazing. Apple Cider Vinegar works by removing unwanted hair build up. It restores the natural pH balance of your hair and can kill bacteria that may be caused from buildup left behind by your hair products. The rinse can also help to sooth itchy and dry scalps and dandruff.

Be sure to get the good stuff. Choose an organic brand of raw apple cider vinegar for the most beauty benefits.

What You Will Need:

  • 1 part raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 part water

Directions:

  • Mix apple cider vinegar and water together.
  • After shampooing, pour mixture into your hair. Massage into scalp. Let sit for 5-15 minutes. Rinse with warm water, finish with cold water.
  • No need to use conditioner after! The apple cider vinegar will leave your hair feeling so soft!

Notes:

  • The smell is strong at first but it will fade away!
  • Repeat this rinse once a week to maintain shiny and healthy hair.
  • You can store your ACV mix in a jar or spritz bottle. Whatever you prefer! best if stored in a cool, dry place.
  • Be careful not to get the ACV in your eyes!!!

Have you ever used Apple Cider Vinegar for your hair? Feel free to share your experiences!!
