Face Of The Day | Purple, Bronze and Coral Spring Glow

4555

This look is really pretty for Spring and Summer months and the touch of bronze shimmer on the eyes adds a beautiful glow to the entire face. I really love this look a lot and it can easily be played up or down by adding more liner or using less color in the crease. All products used in this look with be listed below and of course all products are natural, organic or non-toxic.

PRODUCTS USED:

Face:

I moisturized my skin and then applied RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up in “11” (review here) all over my face and blended it with my fingers. For my cheeks I dabbed some RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in “Smile” which is such a beautiful bright coral color. I also used a tiny bit of Dr. Hauschka Translucent Bronzer Concentrate to add more color to my face.

Eyes:

I started with Benecos Natural Baked Eyeshadow in “Melange Silver Purple” and blended it in the crease of my eyes to add definition. I then added Alima Pure Mineral Eyeshadow in “Coffee Frappe” which I applied only to the middle of the eyelid and on the bottom lash line as well. For liner I used Benecos Natural Kajal Eyeliner in “Black” and to make my eyes appear larger, I opted to not use the liner on my top lash line but only on the bottom. For an even more “wide-awake” look I used RMS Beauty’s Living Luminizer in the inner corners of my eyes and on my brow bone. For my lashes I applied two coats of Jane Iredale’s Longest Lash Mascara.

Brows:

I filled in my brows with Gabriel Cosmetics Eyeshadow in “Chocolate Brown”.

Lips:

I used RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in “Smile” and topped it off with Jane Iredale’s PureGloss Lipgloss in “Beach Plum” (review here). The cohabitation of these two lip colors is beautiful!

Interview with May Lindstrom of May Lindstrom Skin

I am so excited and honored to bring you my very first interview here on BeautybyBritanie. My first interview is with May Lindstrom, owner and founder of the luxurious and completely natural skincare line May Lindstrom Skin which I have reviewed and raved about many times. May is a constant inspiration in my life, a kindred spirit and a friend. I can’t think of someone who embodies the definition of a natural beauty in every way more than May. From modeling to creating her own elite skincare company, being a devoted wife and a dedicated mother, she is truly an inspiration to all and a superwoman in my eyes! I was delighted to interview her and to find out more details regarding her daily essentials.

Read my interview with May below to learn more about what inspires this incredible natural beauty…

Your skin is flawless. Do you ever experiment with makeup and if so, any favorite brands, techniques, or products?

Thank you! My skin is always a work-in-progress. At thirty, it’s finally the best it has ever been. I have extreme chemical sensitivities and so am hyper-aware of what goes into the products I use. Luckily, there are so many incredibly gorgeous lines now that offer beautiful results without any compromises. I adore RMS both for the formulations and the simplicity of the collection. The Un Cover-Up and Living Luminator are staples in my beauty arsenal. Vapour also makes lovely foundation sticks that I love and I have a new crush on Kjaer Weiss cosmetics. I have only used the cream blush (amazing), but the packaging is so divine I have added every piece she makes to my wish list.  As for techniques – keep it light and fresh. For the skin, less is more. Even acneic skin looks better left to breathe, with just a wisp of creamy foundation to even out tone. A dab of color massaged into the cheeks, a highlight on the brow and cheekbone and maybe a little smoke on the eye for the evening. Lips need to be kissed, so I skip high maintenance color there.

What is one skincare rule that you will not compromise on?

Be kind to yourself. It is easy to get swept up in the promises of magical skincare products. The truth is, each person’s skin is so incredibly unique that there is no one answer, no miracle potion. It is always a balance – treating yourself well on the inside allows your radiance to shine on the outside. Nourish your body, feed your soul and treat your skin with tender care.

What does a typical day in the life of May Lindstrom consist of?

I wake up to my hungry baby girl poking my eyelashes or squeezing my lips with her tiny and inquisitive hands. We nurse, I slide a pot of rice onto the stove and gather a couple toys to bring into my studio so Talia can play while I check my morning emails. I make a list of new orders that have come in and pull out stationary to write the notes that are sent out with my packages. If I am running low on inventory, I’ll blend fresh batches of Skin treats or put together boxes. Always, there is wrapping of goodies before they head out the door. A note, a bow, a little something extra, a lot of love.

At some point I’ll remember to eat, take the rice off the stove, toss in some greens, oils, whatever vegetables are floating around in my refrigerator, maybe a big spoonful of kimchi (I’ve started to make it myself, so much fun!) and toasted sesame seeds. This is breakfast, which usually happens more towards lunch.

After, my daughter goes down for a nap and I work as fast as I can. Balancing life as a stay-at-home mom and the founder, formulator and general do-er of all things for my company has proven to be equal parts amazing and challenging. It turns out, I am not superwoman. If emails could collect dust, mine would rival any bunnies that hunker under beds.

Evenings are precious. My husband is home and we get to have family time. Usually I will cook, sometimes we will go for a walk with our yellow lab, Rex. We listen to music, dance around and love on each other. More often that I’d like, we sink into the couch and watch a movie or whatever reality cooking show is airing – Master Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, etc. It’s entertaining enough and gives me an opportunity to just sit and snuggle my husband. We both tend to do to much, for too many hours of the day, so we let this slide.

Before we fall asleep, my husband writes in his journal and I squeeze in cherished moments of wind-down time in the bath. It’s not always easy to do, but it’s important. I preach this constantly and make a valiant effort to follow my own advice. I believe in caring for yourself well, in taking the time to indulge in something delicious. For me, it’s this ritual. I slip into a bath (sometimes with my little daughter, and other times alone). When it is just me behind a closed door, it’s a full escape. I let the water be verging on too-hot, steam filling the room. The Clean Dirt gets massaged over my face and down to my shoulders, the spices bringing heat and my skin softening and releasing. If I have time, I break out The Problem Solver. 45 minutes with this and I feel and look like I’ve been on a spa vacation. I like my bathwater salty, like the ocean with a drizzle of essential oils that vary with my mood. After, a couple pumps of The Youth Dew go over face, neck and decollete. The Good Stuff from the bust down and an extra pump to smooth over my hair. I go to bed soft, warm, renewed. Bedtime is late. I sleep with my baby girl in my arms, my ankle curved around my husband’s calf.

How has being a new mother influenced you in regards to healthy living?

I enjoy healthful living and having a body that feels well fueled and properly nourished. Having Talia has simply reinforced that. I breastfeed and have high awareness that I am building her tiny body solely through what I take in.  There’s power in that and it humbles me. Just as big – my daughter reminds me of the importance of taking those moments of rest even when it feels impossible in my hectic day. She reminds me to appreciate the whirlwind, to be grateful and go all out. And at the end of the day, to let it go. That’s what she does. It’s beautiful to watch her sleep at night, knowing she has held onto nothing, held nothing back. And tomorrow, she’ll go full force again, learning something new, reaching a new milestone without a moment of fear.

What/who keeps you inspired?

My baby girl and my husband. Both who love me so enthusiastically that I literally overflow with it. Being loved like this makes me want to pour love on everyone, all the time. This pushed me to launch my line, to embrace new challenges personally and professionally. I have so much strength on my team. I’m crazy blessed.

Do you follow a specific philosophy when it comes to food?

(ie: vegan, nutritarian, raw food, paleo, etc)

I follow a primarily plant based diet. I believe in eating the rainbow. Fill your plate with deep greens, rich reds and oranges, bright yellows, deep blue and purple. Nature gives us visual cues to the nutritional density in our foods. My dinners look like a kaleidoscope. Grains and legumes are important and fats cannot be underestimated. I eat a lot, and often. Keep it fresh, think outside the box and mix it up.  Flood your cells with the very best quality food you can find and you will be rewarded in how you look and feel.

What are your favorite herbs and spices to work with?

In cooking, I use a lot of smoked paprika, cumin, warm and earthy spices. Really good salts. As we move into spring and summer, I crave something greener – fresh basil, fennel fronds, thyme. I adore sage.

Favorite beverage of choice? Coffee or Tea drinker?

I love coffee, but it makes me sleepy and jittery at the same time – an unfortunate combination. I do truly enjoy tea, largely for the ritual of preparing it. Nearly always with honey and always in a nice cup with a pretty spoon.

What does “beauty” mean to you?

Beauty is found in loving yourself well, creating your own romance and embracing your light. When we care for ourselves in this way, we radiate from the inside out.

If you had one piece of advice for anyone interested in switching over to all-natural products what would it be?

Focus on letting go of what isn’t contributing to your health, wellness and joy. Release it. New favorites will come in time, as the old ones did. You are embarking on a new adventure – it could be scary or it can be an incredible amount of fun. You choose that. When you let it be fun, it’s a playground! The selection of gorgeous and clean brands is multiplying every day, standards are raised higher all the time and the demand for something that is both beautiful and effective is creating a landscape of incredible options that have never existed like this. Embrace it and get swept up in the delight of discovery!

Beauty Buzz | Pelle Beauty Stellar Multitasking Facial Concentrate

IMG_3805xx

Today I bring you a review of a product that I have been using every day and I wake up looking forward to using in the morning – Stellar Multitasking Facial Concentrate by Pelle Beauty.

“Stellar is a very lightweight, fast absorbing, multitasking facial concentrate. We just had to call this one Stellar because of it’s superstar qualities.  High in essential fatty acids & antioxidants, Meadowfoam, Babassu & Black Current oils work together to hydrate and moisturize your complexion. Neroli & Sandalwood essential oils tone & rejuvenate all complexions. Stellar’s lush aroma is one you’ll swoon over as it will lift your spirits. This concentrate is the one you’ll keep going to time & time again because it has so many uses. It will soon become a staple item in your beauty routine”

The creator of Pelle Beauty, Marnie Cipriani has been in the beauty industry for two decades as a Makeup Artist and is passionate about skincare. Her products are made with the most quality of ingredients and are all vegan, paraben and mineral oil free as well as being completely non-toxic. When Marnie contacted me to see if I was interested in trying out some of her products, I checked out her website and was instantly drawn to the Stellar Multitasking Facial Concentrate. I have really been into using only the purest of oils on my face lately. I love the way they make my skin look and feel. The Stellar oil is very unique in the way it quickly absorbs into the skin and the incredible softness that it leaves your skin feeling within just seconds of applying. I also am very fond of the scent. It is heavy in Sandalwood and Neroli which are two of my favorite essential oils. I have been using this every day since I received it and I can honestly say it is one of my favorite facial oils that I have ever used. Look forward to more upcoming posts featuring products from Pelle Beauty!

glow

I took the photos above of myself after moisturizing with the Stellar oil. This oil gives me such a beautiful and natural glow to my face and cheeks. I LOVE it. This facial concentrate works great as a makeup remover at night but because I find the scent of this oil to be so refreshing and uplifting, I prefer to use it in the morning for priming and moisturizing. It wears so well under makeup and has been my go-to makeup primer as it seems to make my concealer or mineral foundation last longer and look more fresh, radiant and adds a very natural glow. You can purchase this oil on the Pelle Beauty website for $28.95

Beauty Buzz | RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up Review and Photos

IMG_2969xx

IMG_2978

I have never been a huge fan of full-coverage foundations as I really enjoy letting my skin breathe and I love to let my freckles peek through and to have a natural and yet luminous glow to my face. I usually opt for minerals to achieve this look but recently started using the RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up which doubles as a concealer and light foundation and gives me the perfect amount of light coverage without ever looking cakey or causing dryness due to the healthy oils in this product like organic Coconut, Castor and Jojoba oils.

 IMG_3008xx

IMG_3031x

You can see in these photo that the “Un” Cover-Up really lets my skin shine through. It doesn’t completely cover my freckles but it does even out any redness, especially around my nose area and it helps to decently cover my dark circles. I find that it doesn’t settle into the lines under my eyes or crease throughout the day, especially if I set it with powder. I also use the lightest color offered which is “11″ and it has a yellow tone to it which can sometimes be a little extra work to blend in at first but after a few minuets the color seems to adjust to my skin tone! Another great thing about this product is that it is build-able so if you are looking for a more than sheer coverage you can add more product and it never looks like you are wearing too much as it blends perfectly!

What It Is:

RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up is unlike typical concealers that can be heavy and drying to the skin. “Un” Cover-Up is formulated to enhance and nourish the skin where it needs it most. Use as a concealer or light foundation to give subtle, flawless, even coverage, banishing ruddiness, sallowness, redness, blemishes and darkness. Because this concealer contains such beneficial and clean ingredients it actually helps heal the skin while giving you a flawless, youthful coverage.

Ingredients:

organic cocos nucifera (coconut) oil*, organic ricinus communis (castor) seed oil*, organic cera alba (beeswax)*, organic theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter*, organic simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*, tocopherol (non-gmo), organic rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) extract*, may contain + / – : titanium dioxide ci 77891, iron oxides ci 77492, ci 77491, ci 77499.

How I use it:

This product is best when applied with fingers as the heat from your fingers will allow this cream product to melt seamlessly into the skin. I love to apply this with fingers and then use a damp Beauty Blender to smooth out everything after applying it with my fingers. I find this gives me the most natural and flawless coverage. I like to apply an oil or moisturizer before using this product because I have dry skin but because this product contains such moisturizing oils you do not have to moisturize before using this, especially if you have normal or oily skin.

Embrace Your Naked Face | Confidence Without Makeup

“The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen in her eyes because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman, with passing years, only grows!”Audrey Hepburn

freckss

It may seem strange for me to do a post about how to be confident without wearing makeup as I do many makeup looks on my blog and posts about my favorite beauty items, etc. However, I have always stated that although I love makeup and I see it as a form of art – for the most part I like to keep my face bare or with very little coverage and color.

IMG_5543x

I think makeup is a wonderful thing but I also think it can be seriously overused and misused. We all have flaws – it’s what makes us human. Instead of hiding every flaw, why not let them show? The more you show off the things you aren’t confident about, the more confident you will become about those things. Sound confusing? It’s not.

Here are some of my personal tips on how to be more confident without (or with little) makeup:

1.) Acknowledge and -embrace- your insecurities:

We all have insecurities. There is no denying that. There is also no shame in being insecure as long as you can acknowledge that you are insecure about something and try to change the way you view that insecurity. For example: I used to be severely insecure about my freckles. Since I was younger, no matter how much sun screen I put on my skin, I would develop freckles within ten minutes of being in the sun. I used to think they were awful until I started to look at them differently. I dated someone once who was obsessed with freckles and would frequently take photographs of mine and others freckles and I started to notice the beauty and uniqueness in them. I now not only accept my freckles but I try my hardest not to cover them up anymore. I also have dark circles which I can’t say I am proud of but I can say I am not nearly as insecure about them anymore and I don’t freak out if I go outside or take photographs without covering the darkness with concealer. I also have redness around my nose (thanks allergies) and I used to always put concealer to cover up the redness and now I let my skin breathe more and I let those flaws shine through. The more you let your flaws make you unique, the more you will come to appreciate those things that make you who you are.

“What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.”- Scott Westerfield

2.) Take care of your skin:

Our skin is our biggest organ, take care of it! So many of us are focused on what we put IN our bodies but neglect what we put ON our bodies. What we put on our skin is ultimately absorbed into our bloodstream so you want to make sure to use the safest and cleanest ingredients as possible. I also say that a little bit goes a long way. You don’t need to have five or ten products in order to have a good skincare regimen or to take care of your skin. As long as you are using common sense when it comes to your skin and taking care of it, you will see results. Think simplicity when it comes to the ingredients you look out for and the routine you develop. When your skin looks better, you will feel more confident without wearing makeup and if you do decide to wear makeup, it will look even better on well treated skin!

3.) A little goes a long way:

You will be surprised at what a few simple things like curling your lashes and grooming your brows will do for your face and features. Add a little tinted moisturizer and lip balm and you will be ready to go. I suggest trying out tinted moisturizer if you are someone who is used to wearing heavy foundation. I also suggest tinted lip balms and investing in a good eyelash curler and brow set! If you are going to wear makeup, focus on enhancing your features instead of covering them. Dab a little cream blush on the apples of your cheeks or swipe some light bronzer to accentuate the cheek bones. The focus should be on enhancing, not covering.

4.) Positive Affirmations:

I have talked about how important it is to be positive and to use mantras and affirmations both here and here. Something as seemingly simple as telling yourself that you are beautiful and worthy can be more helpful than you realize. When you use positive affirmations on a regular basis you will start to see results in your confidence level and over all being. Whenever you feel like something about your physical appearance isn’t what you consider to be “beautiful” or “right” – just tell yourself something that you do love about yourself and take it from there. For however many bad things you can think about yourself, I promise you there are more good, you just have to dig a little deeper to recognize them sometimes!

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”― Confucius

Aquarian Bath | Cinnamon Stick Tooth Powder for Cleaner, Whiter Teeth!

il_fullxfull.187243467

You might think the idea of cleaning your teeth without using toothpaste sounds strange but in fact it’s quite amazing and so much healthier for you and your teeth!

Many natural toothpastes can often throw in a few not-so-great ingredients in them and many contain Baking Soda which is fine in small quantities but when used too much or too often it can wear the enamel off of your teeth. All of the Tooth Powders from Aquarian Bath contain no baking soda.

I have been using the Cinnamon Stick Tooth Powder by Aquarian Bath (you can also find them on Etsy) for over a few weeks in place of my usual Tom’s of Maine toothpaste. If you are looking for an all natural, completely clean, affordable and non-abrasive tooth powder then definitely check out this powder. Since using this powder in such a short time I have noticed that my teeth are whiter and less sensitive and I also feel like this powder cleans better than any toothpaste I have ever tried (chemical-filled or not). It doesn’t irritate my gums like many toothpastes tend to do and I never experience tooth sensitivity anymore which I used to quite a bit, especially when drinking cold or hot drinks. I am proud to say that I am now a tooth powder convert!

This tooth powder is pretty much the most natural way you could clean your teeth but when used regularly you will see how these few (and incredibly potent) ingredients will help to not only whiten your teeth but heal gums and fight any bacteria or bath breath. It also leaves your teeth looking and feeling smoother and healthier within just a few uses.

***

Let’s take a look at the ingredients and the benefits of each:

Ingredients: Bentotine Clay, Organic Cinnamon Powder, Activated Charcoal, 5x Myrrh Powder, and Organic Stevia.

Benefits:

  • Bentonite Clay and Activated Charcoal help to detoxify and wash away bacteria from the mouth.
  • Activated Charcoal helps to whiten teeth.
  • Myrrh extract powder helps to tone the gums.
  • Cinnamon has been used for dental care prior to the invention and regular use of toothpaste and can help prevent cavities.

How To Use:

Untitled-1 copy copy2

Note: Because of the natural darkness of the Activated Charcoal, you will need to take extra care when rinsing your mouth. Make sure to rinse until there is no residue left over. The powder is very easy to rinse off. Make sure to clean out your sink immediately after brushing as the Charcoal can tend to leave a dark residue left over!

**Do not add water to the jar of dry powder. Only add water to the palm of your hand or directly to your brush and massage gently into your palm to pick up the powder on the bristles.

Price, Size and Where To Purchase: This tooth powder comes in a 1 oz ($4.95) or 2 oz ($6.95) container. You can purchase this powder or any other tooth powder directly on Aquarian Bath’s Website or on their Etsy Shop.

Other Flavors: If you aren’t a fan of Cinnamon, no worries! This tooth powder comes in Mint, Black Licorice, & Berry Hibiscus.

Have you ever tried this or any other Tooth Powders? If so what were your experiences? I’d love to hear your thoughts and if you would ever be interested in trying out something like this!

DIY | Organic Lavender and Vanilla Sugar Body Scrub

This is  currently my  favorite body scrub that I have created! The mix of fresh lavender and subtle vanilla is such a relaxing scent and great to use before bed!

Body scrubs are so easy and fun to make and are extremely affordable.  It’s not necessary  to spend money on high-end body scrubs when you can make your own with an infinite amount of options! Once you start to use body scrubs on a regular basis, you will be hooked!

This scrub will leave your skin feeling soft and moisturized! You may not even have to moisturize with lotion or oil after bathing or showering when using this scrub. I have severely dry skin and find that when I use this  my skin stays moisturized long enough to not even need to use anything else for moisture!

Another bonus is that while making this, the entire kitchen smells like Lavender and Vanilla! So you are not only getting softer skin, but aromatherapy benefits as well!

Ingredients:

  1. Organic Lavandin Essential Oil
  2. Vanilla Essential Oil
  3. Organic Coconut Oil
  4. Organic Brown Sugar
  5. Fresh Lavender Buds

Directions:

  1. Crush fresh Lavender buds (I used 1/2 cup) and mix with Sugar (1 cup) with a mortar and pestle (if you have one).
  2. Add in five drops of Lavandin or Lavender Oil and Vanilla Oil
  3. Mix the lavender buds, sugar and essential oils
  4. Stir in one tablespoon of Coconut Oil, mix well until everything is blended
  5. Store in glass jar and leave in bathroom or fridge

Notes:

  1. I used Lavandin in this recipe because I was out of my Lavender Oil but you can use either! They are essentially the same.
  2. You can substitute white sugar for the brown if you prefer a lighter exfoliation.
  3. Organic Essential Oils are always the best but again sometimes more expensive so don’t fret about it too much!
  4. I usually buy my oils and jars from Mountain Rose Herbs, but was out of the ingredients from past scrubs! I am expecting a big shipment soon!
  5. Please be careful after using any body scrub with oil in it as it will make your tub slippery! Make sure to wash after using!

What is your favorite body scrub? If you make this body scrub please let me know what you think of it!

Beauty Review: Christopher Drummond Beauty Duo Phase Concealer

I recently discovered the Christopher Drummond Beauty brand on Hautelook.com which I have recently become obsessed with because they have the best deals and they feature a lot of organic and natural makeup products on their site. I bought two of the Duo Phase Concealer’s in “Light” and “Medium”. It is really a wonderful concealer if you are seeking a full coverage look as it really does a great job of covering everything from dark circles to blemishes to freckles!!!

Formulated with Vitamin E, essential oils and other nutritious botanicals, it also provides protection against skin-damaging free radicals that are soothing and calming to your skin.

  • Rich in soothing natural botanicals
  • Nourishes and conditions your skin
  • Will not clog pores
  • Reduces lines and wrinkles
  • Hydrating to your skin
  • Small amount lasts all day
  • Contains no artificial preservatives
  • Paraben FREE
Ingredients
Aqua (pH-balanced distilled water),Organic Apricot Kernel Oil, Glycerin (vegetable derived), Organic Jojoba Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Cetearyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Vitamin E, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower extract, Lonicera Japonica (honeysuckle) flower extract, Titanium Dioxide (minimal for adhesion), Iron Oxides, Essential oils of rosewood, lavender and rose.

It does a great job at covering my dark circles and I think if I wanted to hide my freckles it would do that as well but most of the time I like to show them off! It doesn’t seem to crease at all on me during the day. I always set my concealer with powder though!

All in all:

Price: $22.50

Pro’s: Great for under the eyes and on blemishes. Hasn’t creased on me yet! Full coverage. Can use as concealer or foundation.

Con’s: Expensive for the amount of product given(it’s worth it in my opinion though). Not a huge range of colors (there are only three to choose from).

Tips: Apply a small amount! A little goes a long way. Set with powder for extra lasting powder.

Britanie

What is Goodebox?

Goodebox is a members only service providing trial sized healthy, eco-sensitive, innovative & effective beauty and personal care products, along with samples of natural & organic health and wellness products.  Each Goodebox includes a pre-screened (meaning we and our experts have tried them and liked them) sample selection of the best healthy beauty products out there.  There’s a learning curve when it comes to finding products that are not only good for you and the planet, but perform well too.  Goodebox helps shorten that learning curve, doing the legwork for you on ingredients, brand ethics, and performance, then allowing you to give it a try it before committing to a full size product.  Members also receive exclusive offers, giveaways, sneak peeks at upcoming products, members only opportunities for product giveaways, practical tips and more.  It’s a gift to yourself, (or someone else), that arrives on the doorstep every month…a little surprise to look forward to and a way to take better care of yourself, one small step at a time.
