My Top Four: Favorite Affordable Facial Oils

fav

To say that I am a lover of facial oils would be a drastic understatement. I truly adore my oils and although I have quite the collection, I still am always lusting after more. There is no such thing as too many oils! With that said, I have a large collection of oils that are more on the expensive side and I know that it’s not realistic for everyone to spend $50-$100 on a small bottle of oil every few months. I do think some oils are worth the extra money and if you are interested in knowing what my favorite less-affordable but brilliantly amazing facial oils are then I will definitely make a post on those!

I get asked a lot which oils are great for the face but will not cost an arm and a leg. I have compiled a list of these top four oils which are all easily available, affordable and incredibly effective. I also chose all of these oils because in my opinion they are the best for all skin types. This list is in no particular order of favorites!!

  1. Badger Damascus Rose Antioxidant Face Oil ($15.27) – This is the most expensive oil of the bunch (still affordable!) and most definitely the most delicious smelling and decadent as well. It smells like a flower garden and is incredibly relaxing. It always gives my skin a beautiful glow and is very moisturizing. It is highly absorbent, antioxidant-rich and contains healing oils like Jojoba, Baobab, Pomegranate and more! This face oil is ideal for dry, mature or combination skin, but can be used on all skin types.
  2. Acure Organics Argan Oil ($13.49) – Coined as “liquid gold”, this is by far the most effective and affordable Argan Oil out there. It is 100% organic, rich in Vitamin E, Essential Fatty Acids and is lightweight and easily absorbed! This oil is not only great for the face, but I also love to use it on my cuticles, hands, and hair!
  3. Sibu Beauty Seabuckthorn Oil ($9.98) – I don’t usually like to choose favorites but I have to say that this is definitely my favorite out of the bunch. In-fact, Seabuckthorn Oil (berry & seed) is now my every day staple. It keeps eczema at bay and reduces redness. Seabuckthorn Seed Oil has been long used as a topical treatment to aid relief of skin conditions like eczema, acne, rosacea, dermaitits, age spots, you name it! It is truly an incredibly healing oil that I can never be without. I have literally gone through five bottles of this oil because I use it day and night!
  4. Aura Cacia Jojoba Oil ($12.12) – Jojoba Oil is the first oil I recommend to anyone who is starting out in the world of facial oils. Why? because it is it is nearly identical in chemical structure to the natural oils in skin and hair, and therefor is easily absorbed without leaving a greasy residue. Here’s another interesting fact: Jojoba Oil is not actually an oil, but a wax :) It also seems to be the the oil that responds best with all skin types from dry to sensitive to oily or acne-prone. It’s a staple-oil that I think everyone should have in their home!

Have you tried any of these Facial Oils? What are YOUR favorite affordable oils?

Makeup Look: Gypsy Goddess

GODDESS

I recently came across this beautiful hair piece from asos that I had lost amongst my many hair accessories for quite some time. When I found it I felt really inspired to do a dramatic gypsy goddess look. Although it’s Spring here and bright lip colors are what’s “in”, I still like to rock a good dark lip every now and then!

GODDESS2

Prep + Prime: Start by moisturizing the skin with a light but hydrating oil. I used Sibu Beauty SeabuckthornSeed Oil and added a light layer of Antipodes Vanilla Pod Hydrating Cream (review here) on top.

Correct + Conceal: To combat my stubborn dark circles I applied Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation in “Like Porcelain” (review here) to the under eyes and on the eyelids to act as an eyeshadow primer. I also used the Kjaer Weis foundation as a concealer around any other areas that needed covering (ie: nose, chin). I blended everything out with a beauty blender.

Bronze + Illuminate: Who doesn’t want dewy skin? For an extra “glowy” look I dabbed RMS Beauty Living Luminizer (for those sensitive to coconut oil – I also use and love Ilia Beauty’s Polkadots & Moonbeams Illuminator) to the highest part of my cheekbones, down the bridge of my nose and on my cupid’s bow. To add some color to my cheeks I blended RMS Beauty Buruti Bronzer (again if sensitive to coconut oil, try Ilia’s Sway Bronzer) and Lip2Cheek in “Smile” to the apples of my cheeks.

Eyes: I started off by applying a light layer of Red Apple Lipstick Eyeshadow in “Porcelain” all over my lid and brow-bone. I then applied Alima Pure Eyeshadow in “Orchid” all over the lid, making sure not to go into the crease. For my crease color I used Red Apple Lipstick’s Pressed Eyeshadow in the color “Vamp”. I blended all three colors together and lined just the outer part of my eye with the Zuzu Luxe Liquid Eyeliner. To bring out the purple from the Alima Pure eyeshadow I applied two coats of Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara in “Aubergine” and added false lashes using EcoTools non-toxic glue.

Lips: I prepped my lips with Dr. Bronner’s Organic Lipbalm and added two layers of Ilia Beauty “Ink Pot” Lipstick. I used the actual lipstick to line my lips before coloring in.

Embracing my face makeup-free and freckles galore!

photo 2(8)x copyx

Bare-Faced & Freckled (besides the lips & eyelashes, of course). I have started to really embrace not wearing any face makeup lately. I love makeup and I love colors but sometimes I think we all get too caught up in trying to “cover” so much of ourselves instead of focusing on enhancing and embracing. I used to wear full coverage foundation to cover my freckles because I hated them and now I honestly love them. They make me -me-. I am more focused on colors and things that bring light to my face, not cover it up. Of course I will still use foundation and concealer because lets face it, there’s almost always a time for it, but for the most part I am trying to let my skin be free of coverage.

Who else is with me on not trying to cover-up so much as enhance and embrace!?

Face Of The Day: Lady In Red

I recently received some new makeup products from three all-natural brands (Modern Minerals Makeup, Genfiore Cosmetics and Red Apple Lipstick) that are all equally amazing and full of clean and pure ingredients. I am excited to showcase the incredible pigment in all three of these brands in this look that I put together. I hope you all enjoy it!

eyeeee

britttt

I only used four brushes (the eyeliner brush is not pictured above) for this entire look all from Modern Minerals Makeup. I am incredibly impressed with the quality of these brushes, they are soft and pack a lot of pigment!

Skin: I started by moisturizing my face with Evanhealy Whipped Shea Olive Leaf and then prepped my face with Vapour Organic Beauty Stratus Instant Skin Perfector.

Face & Cheeks: Modern Minerals Light Almond Foundation, Modern Minerals Heaven Blush with Genfiore Cosmetics Hydrasheer Pressed Mineral Blush in the color “Passion Rose” on top and used as a light contour. I used the same brush to apply all of these colors; the Modern Minerals Duo Fiber Skunk Brush.

Eyes: I started by applying Modern Minerals Oasis Eyeshadow (a gorgeous Turquoise + Teal color) all over the lid of my eye using the Duo Fiber Mini Round Brush and then lightly blended the same color into the crease using the Duo Fiber Tapered Blending Brush. To add more of a bright pop of color I applied Genfiore Mineral Pressed Eye Color in Mare Azzurro to the center part of my eyelid, I applied this using my finger because this picks up much more product and gives more pigmentation. To add some light to my inner eyes and browbone I applied Modern Minerals Seychelles Eyeshadow (a light shell pink). To finish the eye look I applied a tiny bit of Genfiore Hydrasheer Cream Eyeliner in Black using the Modern Minerals Duo Fiber Angle Brush to the outer part of my eye.

Lips: I wanted to make my lips stand out but not take away from the dramatic eye color so I decided to use a beautiful raspberry tinted gloss: Red Apple Lipstick Lipgloss in Queen Of Hearts has a wonderful shine to it and it also smells like spearmint!

Green Beauty Makeup Look and Healthy Expectations

Hi everyone, I hope you are all enjoying 2014 so far. I’m back with my first makeup look for 2014!

I wanted to quickly talk about healthy expectations. With the pressure so many of us put on ourselves for New Years Resolutions, let’s each begin with a few important small steps. Changing over just one mainstream makeup item for a new clean product. Drinking an extra glass of water. Having a healthy vitamin packed green smoothie for breakfast to start our day right. Making an honest effort to keep our thinking positive. Smiling and laughing more. Just begin now. You’ll be amazed at what you will have accomplished within just one week.

Now onto the makeup… :)

Get This Look:

1. I prepped my face with Vapour Organic Beauty Stratus Instant Skin Perfector and then applied the new Kjaer Weis Foundation in the color “Like Porcelain”. I started out using the Kjaer Weis Foundation Blush to apply to smaller areas on my face like around my nose and my eyes. I then blended everything out with a damp Beauty Blender.

2. Instead of adding a blush I decided to mix together my RMS Beauty Buruti Bronzer and Living Luminizer which created a very subtle warm glow to the cheeks, cheekbones and temples.

3. For the eyes I used the Bdellium Tools Green Bambu Smoky Eye Brush Kit to apply two colors from the Jane Iredale Glamour Eye & Lip Palette and Kjaer Weis Wisdom Eyeshadow. I started with RMS Beauty Living Luminizer as an eyelid primer and base all over the lid using my fingers. I then applied Wisdom (a metallic taupe shimmer) with the 777B Shadow Brush and lightly applied Merlot (a matte eggplant color) to the crease of my eyes with the 781B Crease Brush and blended really well. I then used a 760B Liner Brush to apply the Zuzu Luxe Raven Liquid Liner. Using a liner brush can help to give you a more sturdy line. To make my eyes pop I added Hush (a sheer shimmer pink color) to the inner corners of my eyes using the 716 Smoky Eyeliner Brush. I curled my lashes, applied one coat of Kjaer Weis Mascara and applied EcoTools Eyelashes

4. For my brows I used the Jane Iredale Bitty Brow Kit in the color “Brunette”.

5. For my lips I wanted to use one of my absolute favorite lip products and colors: Kjaer Weis Sensuous Plum Lip Tint – it gives the perfect almost nude plum tint to the lips and I found that W3LL People Paganist Lipgloss in #2 wears very well over top! It adds a warm glow to the plum that is very flattering.

Makeup Look: Divinely Sensuous

IMG_9120xx

I reviewed Kjaer Weis’s Sensuous Plum Lip Tint a few days ago and this is the full look I wore in that review. I am a huge smokey-eye fan but it’s been quite awhile since I actually have dabbled with grey tones. I usually go for more brown colors but lately I am really, really loving grey, dark blue, purple and even black colors for a beautiful smokey eye look.

The Look:

IMG_9143

Face:

I prepped my skin with a moisturizer and then added Christopher Drummond Duo-Phase Concealer in “Fair” on any areas that needed concealing. Next up I contoured my face with RMS Beauty Buruti Bronzer.I used my fingers to apply this creamy bronzer first and then blended it out with a contour brush. To add some color to my face, I dabbed Kjaer Weis Desired Glow Cream Blush to the apples of my cheeks using my fingers (this is my favorite way to apply this blush).

Brows:

I filled in my brows using Jane Iredale’s Brow Gel in “Brunette”

Eyes:

I used the Duo-Phase Concealer as a primer for my eyelids (this works really well) and applied a light wash of Kjaer Weis Cloud Nine Eyeshadow (a universally flattering light beam) all over my lid, focusing on the inner corners of the eyes and the brow bone. I then applied Kjaer Weis Divine Eyeshadow (a matte smoke graphite grey) all over the lid, staying under the crease. After blending Divine out very well I then added Kjaer Weis Wisdom Eyeshadow (a metallic taupe shimmer) to the crease for added definition. I also applied this on the lower lash line. To add a more dramatic look to the eyes I applied Zuzu Luxe Raven Liquid Eyeliner to the outer third of my upper lash line (this is a good tip if you have small eyes and want to wear liner without making your eyes appear even smaller.) I finished with two coats of Pure Anada Mascara on my lashes.

Lips:

Using a lip brush I applied two layers of Kjaer Weis Sensuous Plum Lip Tint

Kjaer Weis Lip Tint in Sensuous Plum

IMG_9056

I can’t get enough of Kjaer Weis. Their packaging, colors and performance are brilliant. While these products are not cheap, they are well worth the money for anyone who appreciates a good beauty product. Although there is truly nothing like their packaging, I do suggest buying refillables which I have been doing for their eye shadows. I just stick them right in my Z-Palette and am good to go! It not only is convenient but it does save you some extra money. This was my first Lip Tint from Kjaer Weis so I decided to get the compact. I have to say it’s the perfect size and is so much fun to carry around in my purse — talk about feeling “special” when you go to touch-up your make up in the bathroom :)

*Wearing two layers of Sensuous Plum on my lips (full makeup look coming soon!)*

IMG_9065

IMG_9053

Sensuous Plum is described as “a hint of sensuous plum” and I agree. This color is perfect for daily wear. Although this color can come off looking a bit dark in the photos, it is actually very light but buildable. One layer adds a beautiful sheer plumminess to the lips. I also love that this lip tint is actually moisturizing. I want to try Goddess next!

Color Combination Love: RMS Beauty “Moment” and Kjaer Weis “Desired Glow”

jkk

*I am wearing Kjaer Weis “Desired Glow” on my cheeks and RMS Beauty “Moment” on my lips. I didn’t want to wear any other makeup (including concealer or foundation) so that the colors in each could show through more appropriately although they are even more beautiful in person!*

Every now and then I find a combination of colors that just mesh together so beautifully. Lately I have been loving wearing RMS Beauty’s Lip Shine in “Moment” on my lips and Kjaer Weis’s Cream Blush in “Desired Glow” on the apples of my cheeks. These two products alone are wonderful, but together are something else entirely. They compliment each other so well that lately it’s been difficult for me to reach for one without the other!

Moment is described as a light rose-brown shine that enhances every lip color.” while Desired Glow is described as a natural deep tan.”

Funny enough I was actually apprehensive about both of these products at first due to their more brownish hues. With having such fair skin I just figured I would not be able to pull them off correctly. Boy was I wrong. In person these two colors make me look more awake even when not wearing a speck of anything else on my skin. I sometimes just curl my lashes, dab some Desired Glow on my cheeks and a little bit of Moment on my lips and am out the door! I absolutely love this combination.

Have you ever tried either of these products? What color combinations are you currently loving?

How To Become a Natural Beauty Warrior

It’s been a little over a year since I began my journey to switching over to all natural & organic products. I can’t believe how far so many of us have come in such a short period of time. I just had to make this post because I firmly believe that; There is no sane reason to subject ourselves to the chemical onslaught that is included in so many  traditional beauty products!  There are so many natural alternatives!

*The 515 Chemicals Women Put on Their Bodies Every Day

***

When I saw this incredible info-graphic picture from MindBodyGreen.com I just had to re-blog it (again). In fact I featured this photo on this post over a year ago. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? I wanted to write about it again because sometimes we all get into a rut with buying the same thing over and over again. We need a little push. We don’t take the time to do our research. We are worth it. If we don’t take care of ourselves, then who will?

Where To Start?

There is reputable information everywhere to enable to us to make the switch. Start by searching trusted and respected natural and organic beauty blogs and websites. Don’t forget about your local bookstore! Or search on Amazon and read all the reviews and comments for a book that looks informative. No more excuses. Some people hesitate because they feel the natural way is more expensive. It’s clearly not. You can find so many basic food grade beauty ingredients at your grocery store. There are hundreds of tutorials on YouTube that show you exactly “how to”. You can check out my DIY recipes for many different beauty concoctions. Or another of my favorite resources for instructions on DIY beauty is Mountain Rose Herbs.Your body is your temple~ Treat it exquisitely and with tender loving care. Please. I feel so proud to be a part of this “Green Beauty Revolution”. Together we are changing the future of not only our individual health, but our future children. We are also contributing to preserving our precious Mother Earth. Now that’s a cause to be proud of.

Take a Stand

We won’t stand for the cancer causing “questionable” ingredients in mainstream “beauty” products any longer. Or their multilevel advertising propaganda. What a waste of money. We are fully aware of the corrupt marketing that companies employ to try and paint their products as healthy. It’s just so unethical. Often I reach for my very worn and dogeared copy of Siobhan O’Connor’s incredible book, “No More Dirty Looks”. It never ceases to inspire me to keep “fighting the fight” toward a healthy and sustainable future for us all. We can choose to make our voices heard through our dollars. The money we spend can speak for us and show support to the brands that we trust and that are in business for our benefit. Support companies you know that combine organic & natural sustainably sourced products with ethical business practices. Many of the small women owned companies that I do business with rely on word of mouth and miniscule advertising budgets. They believe in putting their hard earned dollars into superior efficacious  beauty materials. Clean, organic and sometimes exotic ingredients are sourced by these talented artisans .These are small businesses with integrity. They believe in life affirming principles and the old adage, “Do No Harm”. You read about them here on my blog. They are my go-to companies.

Make The Switch

Remember there is absolutely NO reason for us not to be more conscious about what we are applying to our skin. There is no shortage of highly-pigmented, long-lasting and delicious natural alternatives on the market compared to the chemically laden products we’ve all been so accustomed to using in the past.

Between my reviews, wonderful and informative blogs like Organic Beauty Talk, No More Dirty Looks, The Green Beauty Team, and some of my favorite blogs, there is incredibly useful information and more reasons then ever to make the switch over to non-toxic products.

I hope you will join me. There is power in numbers!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead
