Beauty Buzz | Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder SPF 20

IMG_4564xx

The Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder SPF 20 is simply wonderful. I have been using it for months as I wanted to test it out thoroughly before recommending it because I have had bad luck with mineral foundations in the past. I am usually cautious about mineral foundations as I have dry skin and I notice that the loose powder can often make dry skin more noticeable and many mineral foundations contain Bismuth Oxychloride and Talc both of which can cause itchiness, breakouts and skin sensitivity which puts many people off to the idea of mineral foundations in general. Another huge thing with mineral foundations is that many do not contain much or enough coverage depending on your preference.

The Amazing Base is truly miraculous at building product without ever looking cakey and providing beautiful coverage. I use the color “Light Beige” which suits my fair complexion perfectly. I highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of mineral foundations or who has had bad experiences in the past and is looking for one that will do the job of covering what needs to be covered all while looking natural, flawless and without causing skin irritations.

IMG_4596

Benefits:

  • Provides Broad Spectrum SPF 20 and UVA P++ protection that is water resistant for up to 40 minutes.
  • Provides exceptional coverage, including redness and brown spots.
  • Free of oil, talc, dyes and parabens.
  • Ideal for people who suffer from skin problems such as eczema or rosacea.
How To Use:

  • Remove the seal or puncture holes for controlled flow of the minerals. Replace lid, turn upside down and tap. The minerals are now released into the sifter.
  • Cleanse the face and moisturize.
  • Lightly dip each side of our Chisel Powder Brush into the minerals. Tap off any excess using the side of the jar.
  • Using the lid, work the minerals into the brush until all powder is absorbed.
  • Apply the minerals in thin layers using downward strokes. If you’ve put on too much, use our Flocked Sponge to remove any excess. Begin application where you want the most coverage, then lightly layer over the rest of the face. Don’t forget your neck.
  • Apply Absence Oil Control Primer to smooth the surface of the skin before putting on the minerals. Absence controls oil and helps prevent color change. Good for dry skins, too.
  • If the minerals look powdery, wait a few minutes for the skin’s natural oils to emerge, or spritz with D2O, Balance or POMMISST.
  • To “pull” the center of the face out and give more definition to the overall look, use a lighter base in the aesthetic triangle and a darker one on the perimeter.
  • Less is more. It’s better to layer the minerals than try to cover everything at once. You will be surprised at how much coverage you get with very little product.

Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 14%, Zinc Oxide 6%. Ingredients: Mica, Boron Nitride, Zinc Stearate, Dimethicone, Stearic Acid, Plankton Extract, Algae Extract, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract. May Contain: Iron Oxides, Ultramarines, Chromium Oxide Greens.

IMG_4600x

I like to use the Amazing Base with the Chisele Brush and the D20 Hydration Spray which helps to prime and set the minerals.

Face Of The Day | Purple, Bronze and Coral Spring Glow

4555

This look is really pretty for Spring and Summer months and the touch of bronze shimmer on the eyes adds a beautiful glow to the entire face. I really love this look a lot and it can easily be played up or down by adding more liner or using less color in the crease. All products used in this look with be listed below and of course all products are natural, organic or non-toxic.

PRODUCTS USED:

Face:

I moisturized my skin and then applied RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up in “11” (review here) all over my face and blended it with my fingers. For my cheeks I dabbed some RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in “Smile” which is such a beautiful bright coral color. I also used a tiny bit of Dr. Hauschka Translucent Bronzer Concentrate to add more color to my face.

Eyes:

I started with Benecos Natural Baked Eyeshadow in “Melange Silver Purple” and blended it in the crease of my eyes to add definition. I then added Alima Pure Mineral Eyeshadow in “Coffee Frappe” which I applied only to the middle of the eyelid and on the bottom lash line as well. For liner I used Benecos Natural Kajal Eyeliner in “Black” and to make my eyes appear larger, I opted to not use the liner on my top lash line but only on the bottom. For an even more “wide-awake” look I used RMS Beauty’s Living Luminizer in the inner corners of my eyes and on my brow bone. For my lashes I applied two coats of Jane Iredale’s Longest Lash Mascara.

Brows:

I filled in my brows with Gabriel Cosmetics Eyeshadow in “Chocolate Brown”.

Lips:

I used RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in “Smile” and topped it off with Jane Iredale’s PureGloss Lipgloss in “Beach Plum” (review here). The cohabitation of these two lip colors is beautiful!

Life Update | If You Stumble, Make It Part Of The Dance.

“Once the storm is over you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.”Haruki Murakami

I figured I would do a quick life update since I haven’t done one in awhile. Things have been stressful lately – between the new move, my beloved cat recently passing away and our new puppy being sick and in and out of the hospital, I haven’t been getting much sleep and my health has really been a struggle. I’ve been in a lot of pain and haven’t been able to do as much as I would like to. I have been trying my hardest to get everything done that I can on my good days and on the bad days I just give in and let my body rest as much as possible. After years of dealing with chronic health issues I have finally learned to say no when it’s too much for my body and I know when I should and shouldn’t push myself.

I am always working on staying positive and not letting the pain make me hard. I am looking forward to gardening soon. I have some projects I am working on that I am really excited about and I am thankful for the good days that I have and I don’t ever take a pain-free day for granted. It has made me more aware of the beauty in the world and has made me appreciate the little things in life so much more than I think I ever would have had I not dealt with so much pain for so long.

Onto some beautiful images I have taken recently:

For all of my readers who also deal with chronic health issues, I feel your pain and frustration. I know how hard it is but remember you are not alone and there is a greater purpose for all of the pain. This quote below has been an inspiration in my life and I hope you find comfort from it as well:

Natural Haircare Review | Morrocco Method Heavenly Chi Shampoo and Chi Instant Conditioner

IMG_4207

I did a few posts about my current haircare routine as well as my favorite diy apple cider vinegar hair wash awhile back and I haven’t talked much about my haircare routine since then as I hadn’t changed much around until recently. I was sent some samples from Morrocco Method Intl to try out. I was immediately impressed by the purity of their ingredients and was very excited to try out the Heavenly Chi Shampoo and Chi Instant Conditioner. I have used these for three weeks now and think they are wonderful products. I gave a quick mention to them in a recent youtube video I did but wanted to do a full review here on my blog because they are just too good to not give more mention to!

Behind the brand:

The Morrocco Method of hair, face and body care is unique as well as comprehensive. It represents over forty years of research and experimentation, integrating modern scientific knowledge with the ancient healing arts of Ayurvedic and Chinese herbalism. All Morrocco Method products contain only the finest natural derived minerals and botanicals harvested from around the world. and selected for maximum potency. Every Morrocco Method product contains each of the 92 trace minerals.

^^As you can see after reading just a little bit about the history behind this wonderful brand that I was very eager to try their products out. My hair feels wonderful after using both of these products, and has been extra shiny, smooth and extremely easy to brush through without dreaded tangles! If you are used to using Shampoo’s that lather, you will have to get used to this shampoo as it is extremely low sudsing due to such pure ingredients. It takes time to get used to but once you do, you will love the difference it makes in your hair and your scalp.

Face Of The Day | Light Bronze Smokey Eye + Red Lips

vxv

I love doing dramatic looks once and awhile especially to showcase how you can still achieve really pigmented looks using only natural and organic makeup products!

I didn’t need to use many products to achieve this glamorous look. All of the colors used on my eyes are from one eyeshadow palette. I love the combination of brown shadows and red lips. I feel like this look would be appropriate for day or night!

lips

I started out with a BB Cream to give my skin a flawless and glowing finish and added a little bit of a coral/pink blush on my cheeks. For my eyes I primed them using an eyeshadow primer so that my shadows would last longer and appear more pigmented. I applied a light brown eyeshadow color to my crease and blended it with a darker brown color to add more definition and depth to the outer crease. I then applied a golden bronze color on my lid, a matte white color to my brow bone and applied the tiniest bit of a shimmery white color to the inner corners of my eyes. For the last finishes I applied black eyeliner, two coats of mascara and my absolute favorite red lipstick!

DIY | Fresh Picked Dandelion Tea

diy

This is such an easy and fun way to make yourself a delicious healthy cup of herbal tea. Dandelions grow in abundance around our yards and most of the time go unnoticed. I love to pick these beautiful flowers to make myself tea, to use in skincare items as well as to decorate my home with. Go around your surroundings and pick yourself a bunch of Dandelion Flowers. Make sure to wash them really well and then pick off each petal and put in a tea strainer. Boil water, pour into the strainer and let the petals steep for 5-10 minutes before drinking. Sweeten with some Raw Honey and you will have yourself a delicious cup of fresh Dandelion Tea that is wonderful for Springtime and for detoxing!

Some of the many benefits of Dandelion Tea:

  • Dandelion tea aids in digestion, and functions well to relieve digestive disorders like constipation and diarrhea.
  • Dandelion tea works great to purify the blood and cleanse the system.
  • Dandelion tea enhances detoxification, by stimulating urination and, in addition, by replacing the potassium lost in that process.
  • Dandelion tea is one of the most effective herbs for getting the bloat out and helping relieve water retention.
  • Dandelion tea has specific action in reducing inflammation, of the gall bladder and of the bile duct, and for rheumatism and arthritis.
  • Dandelion tea improves the function of and maintains optimum liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, stomach, and gall bladder functions.
  • Dandelion tea helps in treating chronic hepatitis and jaundice disorders, and encourages healing of damaged tissues caused by alcohol liver disease.
  • Dandelion tea helps reduce high cholesterol.
  • Dandelion tea contains antioxidants that help your body fight off toxic bacteria and viruses.
  • Dandelion tea helps with weight control—especially with weight loss.
  • Dandelion tea actively ameliorates disease—it is a potent disease-fighter—and helps the body heal, helps boost immunity, and combat cancer, heart disease, and age-related memory loss.
  • Dandelion tea aids health maintenance for people suffering from Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes.
  • Dandelion tea can be made solely from the blossoms, the leaves, or the roots (roasted or not)—or, the entire plant.
  • Dandelion tea is traditionally served plain (as is), and also made into other beverages—like ale, beer, “coffee”, and wine.
  • Dandelion tea as a face wash cleanses  complexion, improves skin clarity.
  • Dandelion tea makes a great bath addition, especially when made from older, stronger (tougher) leaves.

Notes:

Be mindful of where you are picking your Dandelion’s from as many people spray pesticides and herbicides on their lawn and you do not want to be eating those chemicals! Try to pick the freshest of Dandelions that you can or grow your own!

Interview with May Lindstrom of May Lindstrom Skin

I am so excited and honored to bring you my very first interview here on BeautybyBritanie. My first interview is with May Lindstrom, owner and founder of the luxurious and completely natural skincare line May Lindstrom Skin which I have reviewed and raved about many times. May is a constant inspiration in my life, a kindred spirit and a friend. I can’t think of someone who embodies the definition of a natural beauty in every way more than May. From modeling to creating her own elite skincare company, being a devoted wife and a dedicated mother, she is truly an inspiration to all and a superwoman in my eyes! I was delighted to interview her and to find out more details regarding her daily essentials.

Read my interview with May below to learn more about what inspires this incredible natural beauty…

Your skin is flawless. Do you ever experiment with makeup and if so, any favorite brands, techniques, or products?

Thank you! My skin is always a work-in-progress. At thirty, it’s finally the best it has ever been. I have extreme chemical sensitivities and so am hyper-aware of what goes into the products I use. Luckily, there are so many incredibly gorgeous lines now that offer beautiful results without any compromises. I adore RMS both for the formulations and the simplicity of the collection. The Un Cover-Up and Living Luminator are staples in my beauty arsenal. Vapour also makes lovely foundation sticks that I love and I have a new crush on Kjaer Weiss cosmetics. I have only used the cream blush (amazing), but the packaging is so divine I have added every piece she makes to my wish list.  As for techniques – keep it light and fresh. For the skin, less is more. Even acneic skin looks better left to breathe, with just a wisp of creamy foundation to even out tone. A dab of color massaged into the cheeks, a highlight on the brow and cheekbone and maybe a little smoke on the eye for the evening. Lips need to be kissed, so I skip high maintenance color there.

What is one skincare rule that you will not compromise on?

Be kind to yourself. It is easy to get swept up in the promises of magical skincare products. The truth is, each person’s skin is so incredibly unique that there is no one answer, no miracle potion. It is always a balance – treating yourself well on the inside allows your radiance to shine on the outside. Nourish your body, feed your soul and treat your skin with tender care.

What does a typical day in the life of May Lindstrom consist of?

I wake up to my hungry baby girl poking my eyelashes or squeezing my lips with her tiny and inquisitive hands. We nurse, I slide a pot of rice onto the stove and gather a couple toys to bring into my studio so Talia can play while I check my morning emails. I make a list of new orders that have come in and pull out stationary to write the notes that are sent out with my packages. If I am running low on inventory, I’ll blend fresh batches of Skin treats or put together boxes. Always, there is wrapping of goodies before they head out the door. A note, a bow, a little something extra, a lot of love.

At some point I’ll remember to eat, take the rice off the stove, toss in some greens, oils, whatever vegetables are floating around in my refrigerator, maybe a big spoonful of kimchi (I’ve started to make it myself, so much fun!) and toasted sesame seeds. This is breakfast, which usually happens more towards lunch.

After, my daughter goes down for a nap and I work as fast as I can. Balancing life as a stay-at-home mom and the founder, formulator and general do-er of all things for my company has proven to be equal parts amazing and challenging. It turns out, I am not superwoman. If emails could collect dust, mine would rival any bunnies that hunker under beds.

Evenings are precious. My husband is home and we get to have family time. Usually I will cook, sometimes we will go for a walk with our yellow lab, Rex. We listen to music, dance around and love on each other. More often that I’d like, we sink into the couch and watch a movie or whatever reality cooking show is airing – Master Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, etc. It’s entertaining enough and gives me an opportunity to just sit and snuggle my husband. We both tend to do to much, for too many hours of the day, so we let this slide.

Before we fall asleep, my husband writes in his journal and I squeeze in cherished moments of wind-down time in the bath. It’s not always easy to do, but it’s important. I preach this constantly and make a valiant effort to follow my own advice. I believe in caring for yourself well, in taking the time to indulge in something delicious. For me, it’s this ritual. I slip into a bath (sometimes with my little daughter, and other times alone). When it is just me behind a closed door, it’s a full escape. I let the water be verging on too-hot, steam filling the room. The Clean Dirt gets massaged over my face and down to my shoulders, the spices bringing heat and my skin softening and releasing. If I have time, I break out The Problem Solver. 45 minutes with this and I feel and look like I’ve been on a spa vacation. I like my bathwater salty, like the ocean with a drizzle of essential oils that vary with my mood. After, a couple pumps of The Youth Dew go over face, neck and decollete. The Good Stuff from the bust down and an extra pump to smooth over my hair. I go to bed soft, warm, renewed. Bedtime is late. I sleep with my baby girl in my arms, my ankle curved around my husband’s calf.

How has being a new mother influenced you in regards to healthy living?

I enjoy healthful living and having a body that feels well fueled and properly nourished. Having Talia has simply reinforced that. I breastfeed and have high awareness that I am building her tiny body solely through what I take in.  There’s power in that and it humbles me. Just as big – my daughter reminds me of the importance of taking those moments of rest even when it feels impossible in my hectic day. She reminds me to appreciate the whirlwind, to be grateful and go all out. And at the end of the day, to let it go. That’s what she does. It’s beautiful to watch her sleep at night, knowing she has held onto nothing, held nothing back. And tomorrow, she’ll go full force again, learning something new, reaching a new milestone without a moment of fear.

What/who keeps you inspired?

My baby girl and my husband. Both who love me so enthusiastically that I literally overflow with it. Being loved like this makes me want to pour love on everyone, all the time. This pushed me to launch my line, to embrace new challenges personally and professionally. I have so much strength on my team. I’m crazy blessed.

Do you follow a specific philosophy when it comes to food?

(ie: vegan, nutritarian, raw food, paleo, etc)

I follow a primarily plant based diet. I believe in eating the rainbow. Fill your plate with deep greens, rich reds and oranges, bright yellows, deep blue and purple. Nature gives us visual cues to the nutritional density in our foods. My dinners look like a kaleidoscope. Grains and legumes are important and fats cannot be underestimated. I eat a lot, and often. Keep it fresh, think outside the box and mix it up.  Flood your cells with the very best quality food you can find and you will be rewarded in how you look and feel.

What are your favorite herbs and spices to work with?

In cooking, I use a lot of smoked paprika, cumin, warm and earthy spices. Really good salts. As we move into spring and summer, I crave something greener – fresh basil, fennel fronds, thyme. I adore sage.

Favorite beverage of choice? Coffee or Tea drinker?

I love coffee, but it makes me sleepy and jittery at the same time – an unfortunate combination. I do truly enjoy tea, largely for the ritual of preparing it. Nearly always with honey and always in a nice cup with a pretty spoon.

What does “beauty” mean to you?

Beauty is found in loving yourself well, creating your own romance and embracing your light. When we care for ourselves in this way, we radiate from the inside out.

If you had one piece of advice for anyone interested in switching over to all-natural products what would it be?

Focus on letting go of what isn’t contributing to your health, wellness and joy. Release it. New favorites will come in time, as the old ones did. You are embarking on a new adventure – it could be scary or it can be an incredible amount of fun. You choose that. When you let it be fun, it’s a playground! The selection of gorgeous and clean brands is multiplying every day, standards are raised higher all the time and the demand for something that is both beautiful and effective is creating a landscape of incredible options that have never existed like this. Embrace it and get swept up in the delight of discovery!

Outfit Of The Day | ♡ Spring is in the air and Butterflies are in my hair.

IMG_4036x

Today was absolutely gorgeous outside. I love the bright colors that Spring brings along. The flowers are all in bloom and the cold weather is finally gone. I was inspired to put this outfit together after receiving a few beautiful head pieces from Roses and Lemons. The lovely owner, Cecil Marie, specifically made this beautiful Butterfly hair piece for me and I am so in love with it. I love butterflies and the colors are so perfect for Spring. I combined the colorful hair piece with a beautiful eco-friendly purple agate pendant with vintage rhinestone brooch necklace by The Hemp Butterfly which just added more beautiful pops of colors to this look. Both of these pieces are handmade and you can find them on Etsy(info will be linked below). I think they blended so perfectly together :) I decided to go light with my makeup since the majority of the color is in my outfit but I opted for a bright pink lipbalm that I think complimented the colors very well!

DIY | Ayurvedic Inspired Hydrating and Purifying Face Mask

IMG_3866 copy

One of my favorite things to do is to create different concoctions in my kitchen. I recently came up with this recipe after reading some of my favorite Ayurvedic books on beauty and health. Ayurveda is based on the premise that the mind and body are unified on the level of consciousness, and through this unifying “field” have direct reciprocal effects. Indeed, as the first psychoneuroimmunological science, Ayurveda has emphasized the causative role of thought and behavior in health and disease for thousands of years. As a result, when Ayurvedic practitioners see a skin problem, we observe the person who has it, not just the symptoms themselves.

In Ayurveda, “a line or a blemish on the face–like any sign of stress or illness– is only one puzzle piece in a diagnostic picture that encompasses the entire range of and individuals life, from the innermost aspects of mind and emotions to the outermost aspects of lifestyle and environment.”

One of my favorite Ayurvedic herbs, Triphala is an herb that I cannot be without. I decided to play around with mixing Triphala and some other powerful spices and eventually came up with this recipe and cannot even begin to tell you how amazing it has been for my skin. My skin literally glows after using this. I have also noticed that it gets rid of redness, prevents any acne from forming and leaves my skin feeling so hydrated and toned. I would recommend using this mask once a week to get the full benefits of this powerful skin miracle face mask!

The Ingredients:

  • Triphala – is an herb that I swear by. I even did an entire post on it here. I take it internally every night to cleanse but I also use it in my skincare regimen. It is one of the most powerful herbs you will ever come across and it is equally as beneficial internally as it is externally. I love to use the powder in face masks and cleansers.
  • Turmeric – renowned for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce pigmentation on your face and even out your skin tone. Turmeric has also been dubbed the wonder product because of its ability to fight free radicals. Super anti-oxidant and is great for rashes and inflammation.
  • Nutmeg – I used nutmeg in one of my most recent diy face masks that I created for eczema and sensitive skin. It is so calming and soothing and ideal for irritated, sensitive, eczema or acne prone skin. When nutmeg is added to other healing herbs and spices it helps to further prevent inflammation, acne and skin irritations.
  • Raw Honey – probably my favorite skincare ingredient of all time. It is full of anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties making it ideal for fighting blemishes.
  • Rose Petals – I added these petals to further boost skin-healing properties and to have aromatherapy benefits as roses can be extremely calming for the skin and the senses. The petals also help to add more exfoliation to this mask.

Directions:

  1. 1 teaspoon Triphala powder
  2. 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric
  3. 1 teaspoon Nutmeg
  4. 1 tablespoon Raw Honey
  5. 1/2 teaspoon Rose Petals

* Mix all ingredients together until the consistency is creamy like smooth peanut butter! Apply to a clean face and leave on for 10-15 mins. Gently exfoliate the mixture with warm water and then wash off with warm water or wash cloth. Note: You may have a slight redness to your face after using this mask but do not fear – that is a good sign that the blood is circulating and that you got rid of many dead skin cells! Once you apply a moisturizer, the redness should dissipate within a few minutes to fifteen minutes.

P.S. – It’s completely normal for your sink to be left over looking like this…
