My New Obsession: Maya Chia Beauty

IMG_9685

I am really excited to talk more in-depth about my holy grail face oils. I have been talking about them on Instagram and Snapchat and am FINALLY posting a full review for all of you to learn more about why I love these products and this brand so much.

I try out many products but there are few that really make me fall in love and when that happens, I try my best to keep hush hush until I really give them the proper time to test out. I don’t want to ever speak too quickly and then change my mind after either not trying a product long enough but loving it at first and then having breakouts from it later on. For these two oils I truly tested them day and night for MONTHS.

I can now tell you all that these oils are my HOLY GRAILS. I use both. I will explain more of my love for this brand and these oils below…

The owner and founder of Maya Chia, Susanne Norwitz, is perhaps one of the most humble and kind-hearted people I have had the pleasure of working with. You can tell that this is her passion and it shows in not only her talent but in how the products work.

I have told her numerous times that these serums are magical. I say that because if you are a long-time reader of mine then you will know how sensitive my skin is… and by sensitive I mean INCREDIBLY SENSITIVE. Knowing this, I now take my time when testing out any new skincare products especially if they are oil based as I tend to be prone to milia, breakouts around my mouth and chin (usually perioral dermatitis) as well as dermatitis especially from products with too many essential oils.

ABOUT MAYA CHIA:

New-Maya-Chia-Logo-Web

Maya Chia is a clean beauty line founded by Susanne Norwitz, an escapee of the corporate fast track and an unabashed dreamer/believer in pursuing your passions. In her case, this meant creating the highest quality skincare product and giving back in the process.

Her career began as a speechwriter for Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of NYC, where she eventually supervised the department. Susanne went on to earn a master’s degree at Harvard University. After school, she oversaw the external communications and social media outreach activities for Dunkin’ Brands and Kellogg Company and its subsidiaries, including Kashi. She has since acted as a senior communications advisor, and wrote speeches for C-suite executives at Fortune 100 companies, including Revlon and Walgreens.

Maya Chia Beauty was launched in December of 2014 when the creator, Susanne, left her corporate career to pursue her passion. Susanne was always keenly interested in the act of skin care rituals, and how little acts of self care can profoundly transform the way one feels about yourself. She also had a lifelong interest in the Maya people that started with her father, who is a surgeon, and traveled to Guatemala to perform cleft lip palate surgery on the Mayas

As she casually happened across the mention of chia, she realized that it was an amazing nutritional powerhouse with proven skincare benefits – and also happened to be a staple of the Maya people for thousands of years. Her interest in learning more about the Maya culture increased with the addition of her two stepchildren who were both born in Guatemala, an area rich in Maya heritage. When she learned chia was a staple for the Mayas, and held untold skin benefits, Maya Chia was born.

THE PROCESS:

Maya Chia uses a patented process to extract the oil called supercritical extraction. The gentle oxygen-free, solvent-free process results in oil with a total absence of chemical residues and impurities, and one that most closely mirrors the chemical profile of the plant. What that means for our customer is that they get the best, purest, most stable, effective, and potent chia oil in the market with up to a 2-year shelf life. Maya Chia donates a portion of the net profits to charitable organizations that help build schools and farms for the Maya people.

HOW I USE THEM:

I posted a little video of me applying the oils here! and you can watch below as well…

I start with the Omega Chia Oil, 3 drops in the palm of my hand and massage into damp skin. I then go in with 1 drop of the Super Couple and apply around my eyes, nose, cheeks and any targeted areas where I need help with hyper-pigmentation, dark circles or want an extra glow! Sometimes these are all I use at night while other times I will use a face cream before applying both oils. During the day I only use the Omega Chia Oil and I LOVE to apply it before makeup. It is my favorite primer for underneath makeup, especially mineral. It helps my makeup last all day and look extra dewy! I love it.

MY RESULTS:

These oils have helped my skin to truly glow more than I have ever seen and I am now wearing less foundation when I do wear makeup. If you are struggling with hypersensitive skin, perioral dermatitis, hormonal acne, eczema, etc, I know how frustrating it is. I plan to do another in-depth post on my ENTIRE skincare routine. Through trial and error (and a lot of patience!) I have finally found what works for me and I know hat you can too. Sometimes it takes using less products and figuring out what specific ingredients your skin responds to. These special oils have given me faith in oils again. For awhile I was unable to use ANY because my skin would freak out. Also – my dark circles have significantly improved. Milia is almost gone, hyperpigmentation is so much better, and my skin is the SOFTEST it’s ever been!

WHERE TO BUY:

You can purchase both of these oils plus other products from the line directly at MayaChia.Com (use code beautybybritanie to save you $!) or at the wonderful The Detox Market or BeauTeaBar!

***

PLEASE share with me your thoughts or experiences with these oils or any other products from the line. I am SO passionate about these and would love to hear what you think! I cannot wait to try more from the line.

xoxo,

Britanie

  1. Thanks for such a thorough and informative review!

Maya Chia is quickly becoming a favorite among our customers, and I am so glad that you have seen the true magic of these oils. And to top it off, Susanne is quite possibly the kindest most supportive person I’ve ever worked with! She also donates to some amazing organizations so supporting Maya Chia is like a win win for me 🙂

Thanks so much for including BeauTeaBar in your review. I am so excited to share your experience with our customers as well because so many of them suffer from sensitive skin as well (not to mention the other frustrating issues you mentioned).

  2. These sound really great, but I didn’t read where you indicated the origins of the essential oils in the products. Are the essential oils pesticide-free/wild-crafted/organic? How were they extracted and are they hexane-free? I know it’s common to talk about carrier oils and whether or not they are organic/pesticide/hexane-free (which seems to be the case with these oils due to the chia CO2 extraction), but essential oils are also important because they are so concentrated. Even though a small percentage of EO is in a product, due to the high concentration of compounds in essential oils if there’s any hexane or pesticides in them you are actually getting quite a bit. Absolutes are often hexane-solvent extracted. This would be my only concern. Otherwise, the oils look super lovely and sound like a good find!

    1. Hi. Some quick research in the company’s website: “…organic and wildcrafted ingredients from conscious growers across the world. Our products are never formulated with parabens, pthalates, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, and SLSs. All of our products are made in the USA from domestic and imported components.”

  3. Wow I’ve been wanting to try these for so long! Glad to hear that you like them. I def will have to just buy them then! Having oily skin it’s been hard trying oils after so many failed attempts, and nowadays my skin has not been the best. Hope these will work out for me!

  4. Hi Britanie! =) Thank you for this lovely post; I’ve really been enjoying following you for the past few months!

I was going through a couple of your blog posts this evening and noticed you mentioned being prone to Milia and how they can be worsened by excessive use of oils. I’ve been struggling a lot with Milia the past couple years, and I was just wondering if you’ve come across any products or just have any general advice for dealing with it. I don’t use many products or even makeup on my face other than basic cleaning and exfoliating; my skin is rather oily in general, so maybe it’s a need for me to wash my face twice a day rather than once.

Haha, sorry! I’ve just never come across anyone else talking about their experience with Milia, and I was excited to read that someone else is struggling with it as well and wondered if you might have any advice. =)

Thanks! Hope you have a lovely day/night.

  5. Hi Britanie!

Thanks for the review! I’m curious as to why you are using both oils- do you think I would be good with just using the super couple? (I have the same exact skin type you described that you have!)
